Lost and Found

On the advice of some of my colleagues, I sat down for the first time last night and watched lost. I started with the hour long re-cap of the entire series which I found to be much more entertaining and engaging than I thought it would be. I have to admit though, I did find the narrator's voice slightly creepy/annoying and pedophilic. It was my plan to watch the recap, and if it hooked me, I would watch the new episode.

Well, I was hooked. The story was much different than I thought. I half expected it to be like a scripted Survivor but it turned out to be much more like Lord of the Fies. The new episode, however, annoyed me in the way the second half of Vanilla Sky annoyed me. It seemed like they were trying too hard to be creative or artsy. Plus, the fat guy doesn't do it for me. I'll probably sit down next week and continue watching it, if only because it is February and there is not much else to do in Michigan this time of year. And I am slightly intrigued by the story. So, here are my final thoughts/questions:

1. If this is the best show on TV, a strong argument can be made for how weak TV shows currently are.

2. I kept looking for a deeper meaning to the character John Locke. Why was he given that name? Does it have anything to do with THE John Locke whose writings served as the basis for the Revolution.

3. Is the island invisible? Was this ever explained?

Art, I need some answers!

I have yet to see an episode. But - almost sadly, in this case - I respect both yours and Art's opinions. So, perhaps I will have to find Lost on my television some time in my future. I wish I could get ahold of that recap episode you saw somehow. (You Tube, I should think.)

Joe I was kind of late to the party with Lost for the same reason: I thought it was Survivor with a plot. I picked up the season 1 dvd set on a whim and have been hooked ever since. I'd recommend doing the same if you've got the time to spare.

What's really great about it are the characters. For the first three seasons, Lost jumped between the present on the island and the past, showing everyone before they ended up there. The flashbacks did a good job of fleshing out the characters and making them more engaging.

After the third season, they've switched to a flash-forward format, jumping between the present and the future where we see that people actually made it off the island. However, we don't know who or how it all went down so it gives us reason to tune in every week.

I agree, it was lame to focus the premiere's flash-forward on the fat guy because I think he's one of the weaker characters on the show. Hopefully next week it's someone more interesting, like Sawyer or Locke (fyi: Jack's a whiny bitch).

The island was invisible for the first two seasons. It was revealed in season 2 that there was some sort of electro-magnetic barrier covering the island, and this barrier messed up all sorts of radio equipment and telemetry from the outside world. However, the massive explosion that ensued when "the Hatch" blew up at the end of season 2 destroyed the barrier and made the island appear on radar. Since then people have been trying to find it (presumably somewhere between Australia and L.A.).

You may be thinking wtf is up with this random island shit but that's what's interesting about the show. There's so much stuff going on for a supposedly deserted island, we just get so wrapped up in trying to figure out why. That's why it's so addicting.

Welcome aboard and I hope you enjoy it as the season goes on!

I stand corrected, I think the island is still invisible. when the hatch blew up at the end of the 2nd season, the explosion caused an electromagnetic pulse that was picked up on some radars of parties interested in finding the island. At this point, i think people have a general idea where to look for it now.
